Kristin and Tom found us on Offbeat Bride, but we later realized we were connected through the roller derby world, too. A lot of my friends from Pioneer Valley Roller Derby had skated with (or against) Hartford Area Roller Derby, where Tom and Kristin met. Now they live in California, but their love and skates made a full lap back to Connecticut for this deco and derby-inspired celebration. We were THRILLED to not only meet another couple that met through roller derby, but to get our first chance at capturing a "first skate!"
There were so many things about this wedding that reflected who Tom and Kristin are as people, starting with their decision about names. Instead of Kristin taking Tom's last name, they decided to use both of their last names (Mara and Elliott) and combine them into one: Marriott. I can't think of a more imaginative, fun, and simple way to turn a patriarchal tradition into something beautifully equal.
The personal touches went on from there: Tom designed the video-game inspired Save-the-Dates, the programs, and the stickers on the derby whistles given out at the end of the night. The vintage-inspired dress was something Kristin fell in love with 7 years ago but never dreamed of finding again. Tom actually found it for her on a clothing recycling website, and her maid of honor (/bench coach) altered and reworked the dress so it would fit just right. They made the Gatsby-inspired centerpieces and feather hairpieces for the bridesmaids, who picked out their own 1920's dresses. The bridesmaids received era garters and stockings as gifts and groomsmen got Final Fantasy pins. They had a jam timer for their ceremony (another derby nod) during which they placed love locks on a ladder, because Kristin' dad had always joked that when the time came for his kids to get married, he'd provide a ladder so they can climb out the window and elope.
After the ceremony we all walked over to Bushnell Park for some photos on the green and by the carousel (everyone got a ride too!) and returned later to the Society Room for an evening of dinner, dessert, dancing and of course, skating.
