Nancy and Will live in Los Angeles, but Nancy happened to have a friend in Austin that I grew up with in Massachusetts. They were having their wedding here in MA, and once we learned that Nancy and I share a love for playing roller derby, we knew it was meant to be!
Will and Nancy met at a roller derby party, and when they flew to the east coast together to visit Will's family, he decided to give her a tour of his home town. It turns out he was using the drive time to work up the courage to ask her to marry him. They stopped at a small pond where he popped the question. Now they drive by that spot every time they visit his Dad.
Nancy's family is from Kenya, so they incorporated a lot of Kenyan wedding traditions into the day. They started with a "presentation of the bride" at the house where she was getting ready, which involved lots of singing, clapping, blessings, food, and exchanging of gifts as the two families came together. After that we all went to the Fruitlands Museum for their "first look" followed by photos on the hill (which almost got rained out!) The sun started to peek through the clouds again during their Christian ceremony under the tent, which was followed by a traditional Kenyan "entrance of the bride and groom" with the women of the family singing and dancing in circles around the couple.
We were so impressed with Nancy's talent with florals and decor: she did her own centerpieces, bouquets, signs, arbor, and boutonnieres. She also made a beautiful vibrant backdrop for their photo booth, and the cake topper they chose was a personal favorite of ours. It all came together beautifully with the sparkling gold dresses worn by the bridesmaids, and the flower girl - who decided to wear a tux with gold sequin sneakers!
After dinner we got a beautiful purple sunset, so we chased it up the hill for some scenic couple photos and quiet time. Upon our return, the traditions and festivities resumed, including traditional Kenyan gifts and an adornment ceremony.
This happy, loving group of people partied late into the night and gave us so many beautiful moments to capture. Congratulations to Will, Nancy and your sweet families!
